Religious Niche
The Project

Why are Gozo's religious niches called
"Silent Witnesses to the Past"?

Victoria's street shrines are among the oldest continuously maintained sacred objects in the Maltese islands — small arched niches set into walls and doorways that have been tended by residents for hundreds of years. They are called "silent witnesses" because, unlike churches or monuments, they record the private devotions of ordinary families rather than grand civic events. This page explores the history, meaning, and survival of these remarkable objects.

Gozo enchants with its beauty, ancient history, and timeless Maltese charm. I have been captivated by the silent witnesses to its past: the religious niches found throughout the islands of Malta and Gozo.

In our ever-changing world, many of these architectural and spiritual treasures are sadly at risk—casualties of overdevelopment or simple lack of care and interest. This project is a celebration and enduring tribute to their presence.

"I hope this project inspires you to go seek out these wonderful niches for yourself and experience a piece of Gozo's living history."

The Capital

What is the history of the Majestic Cittadella in Victoria, Gozo?

At the highest point of the city stands the Cittadella, a majestic fortified city with roots dating back to the Bronze Age. Strategically positioned, it provided the island's only real safe haven for centuries.

Beyond the grandeur of the Citadel lies something quieter and just as captivating— the city's numerous religious street niches. These small shrines are integral to the streetscape, tucked into walls, above doorways, and at street corners throughout Victoria.

Nicċeċ is researched, written, and photographed by Rob Polli, a documentary photographer and heritage researcher based in Malta. Rob personally visits and documents each street shrine — travelling on foot through the streets of Victoria, Gozo to capture details that are otherwise impossible to see from street level.

His work is an independent, long-term effort to preserve a record of Gozo's religious niches before time, development, or neglect erases them.
