What makes Gozo's
traditional culture so vibrant?
Gozo's cultural identity is shaped by two forces working in harmony: deep Catholic devotion, expressed through festas, processions, and the street niches that line every quarter; and an exuberant civic pride that bursts into colour every summer. Victoria — the island's capital — acts as the stage for both, guaranteeing that there is always something extraordinary unfolding in its streets.
Nowhere is Victoria's cultural energy more vividly felt than during its two great summer festas — The Feast of St George and The Assumption of Mary.
What are the traditional religious festas in Victoria?
Solemn processions, marching bands, and community warmth that transforms the city.
When is the Gozo Carnival and what should you expect?
A vibrant explosion of colour, rhythm, and fantastical creations taking centre stage.
"Victoria acts as the island's central stage, guaranteeing that there is always something wonderful going on."

Nicċeċ is researched, written, and photographed by Rob Polli, a documentary photographer and heritage researcher based in Malta. Rob personally visits and documents each street shrine — travelling on foot through the streets of Victoria, Gozo to capture details that are otherwise impossible to see from street level.
His work is an independent, long-term effort to preserve a record of Gozo's religious niches before time, development, or neglect erases them.
